Matthew Quisel

Played Guitar for the Newton South Jazz Ensemble. One of 3 big bands selected nationally to attend the Charles Mingus Jazz Festival in 2024 and 2025. One of 30 bands selected internationally to attend Essentially Ellington competition in May 2025.

Recreated Newton South STEM Journal by designing website from scratch, recruiting 10 new consistent writers, and publishing a printed edition highlighting student research. Hosted weekly meetings and managed 3 editions + printed edition.

Worked as a tutor for the USABO competition. Contacted 40 schools across Massachusetts to find clients and taught weekly sessions to 7 students. Created practice problems and lectures.

Worked in the lab of Dr. Chin at Tufts Medical Center. Assisted the lab team on their research into a treatment for Barth Syndrome using enzyme replacement therapy. Managed my own experiments and prepared my own research paper and presentation for RSI about the internship.

Worked for two weeks each summer to instruct ~10 middle school students on genetics and anatomy and physiology. Created my own course materials, study materials, and games to help students interact with the content.

Worked in the lab of Dr. Chitalia at Boston Medical Center. Performed experiments related to the lab's focus of understanding the relationship between kidney disease and solutes derived from IDO-1 related pathways. Participated in writing and researching for a review paper on sickle cell nephropathy as it pertains to kidney disease.
